This year we will be bringing back the tradition of live music Napa style with the Sorry Lot, St. Paddy’s swag for purchase, tasty brews, and the best corned beef and cabbage in town! The Origins of St. Patrick’s Day
We all know and love the holiday that is St. Paddy’s Day. But let’s dive into the origins of this celebration. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and this day celebrates the Roman Catholic feast day dedicated to him. Patrick was Maewyn and was born in Roman Britain. He was kidnapped and brought to Ireland where he escaped to a monastery in France. He then converted to Christianity and, as a missionary, went back to Ireland in 432. According to legend, Patrick confronted the Druids at Tara and abolished their pagan rites. Often, you’ll hear tales of Patrick abolishing snakes from Ireland – whether those snakes were metaphors for pagans/Druids is unknown. He became a bishop and was declared Ireland’s patron saint after his death.
It wasn’t until after Irish immigrants came to the U.S that St. Patrick’s Day became a real lively celebration with parades, parties, and feasts. The holiday became a time for Irish Americans to reconnect with their roots.
Corned Beef and Cabbage
An Irish American dish turned holiday staple meal. In the past, Irish Americans struggled to afford certain meals. On this holiday, the best meal many could afford was corned beef and cabbage.
