Napa Valley’s Rich Brewing History (in Progress)
Brewing in Napa Valley started in the mid to late 1800’s. By 1895 there were at least three breweries in Napa. Napa City Brewing and The Brewer’s Collective were the largest. Based on fire insurance records of the vessel floor prints we estimate they were producing about 100,000 bbl per year at Napa City Brewery.
Prohibition ended brewing in Napa. It would not get another brewery till the 1980s.
In 1987 Napa Valley Brewing company opened the first brewery since prohibition in Napa County.
Shortly after in 1988 Willet’s Brewery opened to become Downtown Joe’s in 1993.
In 1990 Dan Holm opened Brown Street Brewery. In its short 2 years of existence it was famous for its ginseng infused beers.
