Downtown Joe’s Celebrates 25 Years in Napa Valley
The year 2018 brings a lot of hope and a lot of fun. It also marks the 25th year anniversary of Downtown Joe’s. Becoming a staple in the downtown Napa restaurants scene has been a journey and we have all our customers to thank for the endless support. With the help of the community we have become for favorite family friendly restaurants Napa destination and beloved brew pub in Napa.
A Look Back
Before Downtown Joe’s became one of the best family friendly restaurants Napa offers, the Oberon building (where we are housed) was built in 1893. Patrons came to buy cigars, get a shave or haircut, and drink a cold beer. After a 1932 fire damaged the building, it was rebuilt in the art deco style seen today. Boxing legend Rocky Marciano hung out at the Oberon too.
In 2010, the infrastructure of the building underwent an 8 month seismic retrofit allowing it to survive the 6.0 earthquake in 2014. Since 2012, the building and Downtown Joe’s, via the small seismograph installed, have been providing earthquake data to the United States Geological Survey.
Theodore Hamms’ great grandson, Chuck Ankeny, in 1985 decided to brew beer in Napa. He hired brew master Brian Hunt to design a 7 barrel microbrewery inside the Oberon and in 1988 Willit’s Brewery opened.
In 1993, locals Joe and Nancye Peatmen bought the brewery with Joe Ruffino – a 3rd generation Napa restaurateur. Brian Hunt stayed and helped them develop Downtown Joe’s Pub. Fast forward to today and Joe and Nancye continue to run one of the region’s most beloved family friendly restaurants Napa spot and brew pub.
